The Princessipal

You may wonder about the significance of the name of this website.  Trust me, there is a story behind it, for sure!

When I was a first-year principal, the Superintendent's granddaughter was starting kindergarten on my campus.  One day, prior to school starting, I was working in my office, and I had some visitors.  My Superintendent had brought his granddaughter to meet me.  

As I was introduced to her, her grandfather told me this story. 

"As Em and I were walking onto campus, I had told her just how much she was going to like you.  I told her that Principal Freeman was a personal friend, that SHE was a nice lady, and that SHE would take care of her and make sure she was safe at school.

Em stopped walking and said, 'Grandpa. why do you keep saying SHE?'  I realized then that I was about to have a gender-equity discussion with a 5-year-old.  I told her that women can be principals, doctors, lawyers, contractors, anything they wanted to be!

Em thought about it and said, 'but Grandpa, you keep calling her PRINC-ipal.  Shouldn't she be a PRINCESS-ipal?'  ???"

So, there you have it!  They story behind the name.  I quickly became known as Princessipal Freeman, and the moniker has stuck with me!
